Natural Treatments for Women’s Health

Alternative Natural Treatments for Women’s Health
by Dr. Randy Martin, OMD, PhD, LAc

My specialty over the past 30+ years has always been Women’s Health. In fact, in 1985 I wrote my Ph.D. doctoral dissertation on Alternative Treatments for PMS using Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Nutrition and Classical Homeopathy.

Woman’s health issues are still the largest segment of health problems that I treat. Here is a summary of some of the issues you or your friends may have which are successfully treated using my Alternative types of medical treatments.

Infertility and Childbirth – with an increasing number of couples and single women chosing to wait to give birth, infertility is often an issue. Various alternative treatments are quite helpful in achieving your goal of having children. Acupuncture and homeopathic medicine are also useful to have in the hospital setting during childbirth, both to reduce pain, and help the birthing process progress more quickly.

PMS – food cravings, cramps, acne, and mood swings are just a few of the PMS symptoms that alternative treatments are very effective for. More than a few women have credited me with saving their marriages by alleviating thier PMS symptoms.

Menopausal Symptoms – hot flashes, mood swings, incomnia, headaches, dryness, constipation, and a host of other symptoms are common during hormonal change of life. Acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Classical Homeopathy can not only lesson the symptoms, but also ease the transition emotionally.

Natural Breast Enhancement – acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to help women not only firm, but also to enlarge and enhance the breasts.

Facial Wrinkles – cosmetic acupuncture is well-known to help lesson signs of aging. Many women come to me for acupuncture alone, and manuy others add facial needles to their other on-going acupuncture treatments.

Fibroids / Cysts / Endometriosis – the condition allowing for lumps and discord in the reproductive area, according the Chinese medical theory, is called Damp Heat in the Lower Burner. What this means is that there is severe “stagnation” in the area of the uterus/overies. We treat this using Chinese herbs and acupuncture. Changes in diet are also helpful. Treatment is quite successful!

Natural Hormone Replacement Alternatives – many women do need some sort of hormone replacement during life cycle transitions. We can use Chinese and Western herbs, instead of traditionally used parmaceutical hormones, or so-called “bio-identical hormones”….. and without the side effects.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Newly Published Article on Irritable Bowel Syndrome
by Dr. Randy Martin, OMD, PhD, LAc

The following article of was just published in a neighborhood magazine here in Los Angeles. The subject is IBS/IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease). There are a wide range of digestive issues that my article addresses.

The suggestions it contains would be helpful for anyone wanting to improve their digestion. In Chinese medicine, we say that all healing begins in the gut. In other words, the range of problems that start and have their cause in the gut include:

*Leaky Gut Syndrome

*All types of Arthritis

*Migraine headaches

*Eczema and Psoriasis

*Bad breath

*Dental problems, including gums

*Sinus problems

*All ear, nose and throat infections

*Inflammation anywhere in the body.

This is why my article is so important. So many people have these types of problems and don’t realize that they all begin with digestion and assimilation of what we eat, first and foremost.

I hope you enjoy it. And feel free to email with any follow-up questions

(Note: I’ve included a copy of the article below, and if you have trouble reading it, it’s also in PDF format at the end of this newsletter.)

IBS, Ulcerative Colitis, IBD and Crohn’s Disease

IBS, Ulcerative Colitis, IBD and Crohn’s Disease
By Dr. Randy Martin, OMD, LAc, CCH, QME
One of the most effective types of treatments I have ever done over the past thirty+ years in private practice has been treatment of the range of digestive problems called inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD). The range of diagnoses’ that are treated include colitis, IBS, Crohn’s disease, indigestion, gas, bloating, inflammation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and fatigue.

I have lectured extensively to support groups and I always emphasis the incredible effectiveness of holistic treatment. I have had patients who were unable to leave home for longer than a few hours at a time, who, after treatment had absolutely zero limitations on their travel from home. I have had many patients state that their lives had been totally transformed with holistic treatment.

Most of my patients had been living with these problems for many years, and had not realized there were safe, natural, and effective methods for treating their problems.

Although many patients respond to traditional Western treatment, some fail to respond to these drugs. In addition, there are always risk factors and side effects from the Western pharmaceutacal drugs; in contrast, natural treatments have no side effects and are risk free.

Smoking, nicotine, coffee, and steroidal drugs are known to make Ulcerative Colits and IBS much worse, although there is also a genetic factor to consider. Diet has also been shown to play a large role in the causation of IBS.

In Chinese medicine, we have our own methods for determining which dietary factors are involved in exacerbating IBS.

We use the tongue and pulse diagnosis in Chinese medicine. According to these methods, we can determine which diet would be the best for each unique person.

Common foods which should always be avoided in IBD are ice cream, iced drinks, wheat and gluten containing foods, corn, cow’s dairy products, peanuts, red meat, sugar containing foods, cold, raw or frozen foods, coffee, caffeine, oranges, alcohol, spicy foods, fried foods, and other foods which we label as “Yin” or “Damp” in Chinese medicine.

Correcting nutritional deficiencies is a major portion of the treatment as well. By analyzing blood, saliva, urine, stool, and/or hair tests, we can see where the problems arise, and gain an additional understanding in developing the individualized treatment plans.

Supplements which are often needed include Vitamin A and Beta Carotene, DHEA, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and the essential fatty acids, including omega-3, 6 and 9. Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacteria are also very helpful.

Also, we use Glutamine, Phosphatidylcholine and anti-inflammatory supplements such as Curcumin, Quercetin and Rutin.

We also use Chinese herbs and acupuncture to heal the digestive tract and strengthen the lining of the stomach and small intestines.

Please be sure to never take yourself off any prescribed medications without your doctor’s supervision. The quantities for supplements and herbs vary with each individual. Not all supplements work for everyone. This holistic program should be individually prescribed by your doctor to meet your particular needs.

In summary, the combined use of both Western and natural methods of treating IBD is quite effective. Some people respond better to one or more types of treatment, but everyone will do well with some combination.

Holistic Treatment of Cold and Flu

Cold and Flu Treatments
Speaking to one of my patients yesterday, a nurse who works for Kaiser, she said that the cold and flu season is already in epidemic proportions here in LA.   I have personally not seen this many people sick all at once, in a long time.  The following are my recommendations for treatment and prevention of colds and flu.
1.  If you are sniffling and coughing, then stay at home – do not go to work or other places where you can pass it on to others.
2.  Wash your hands frequently with hot water and soap.
3.  Do not shake hands and have unnecessary contact with others.
4.  Use anti-biotic wipes when you must have contact with others who may be sick or touching public items such as ATM’s, elevator buttons, door handles, public restroom handles, etc.
5.  Cover your mouth if you sneeze or cough and stay away from anyone who you notice is sniffling, sneezing, or coughing.
6.  Remember that you can pass the cold or flu virus to another person after they have been infected, even if they have not yet manifested symptoms.   It generally takes 24-48 hours to manifest symptoms after contact.
7.  If you must travel by plane, start taking as much of the Stage 1 program below for prevention as possible.
8.  If you are not feeling well, the worst thing to do is to go to your doctor.  Not only will you pass your germs to everyone else, but you will also pick up additional germs.
9.  If you don’t feel well, please email me with your symptoms and for a small consultation fee, I’ll work out an individualized program specific for your symptoms and your constitution and have the products sent right to your home.

Acupuncture for Emotional Health

Acupuncture Successful for Emotional Health

At some point in life almost everyone deals with major upheavals or emotional distress. These events can trigger a host of unexpected feelings and behaviors from depression and panic attacks to major disruptions in sleep or binge eating.
Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can alleviate symptoms associated with mental health issues in treating the root cause of the problem by helping to rebalance the body’s internal environment.

Mental health issues are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning which result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. The good news about mental disorders is that recovery is often possible.

Examples of serious mental health conditions that can be successfully treated using Acupuncture, Herbs, Nutrition and Homeopathy include:  depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),insomnia, and anxiety.

From an Oriental medicine perspective mental health disorders can cause a disruption in the flow of vital energy, or qi, through the body.   Acupuncture treatments can correct these imbalances and directly affect the way your body manages your mental health.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders

Oriental Medicine treats the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of techniques including acupuncture, lifestyle/dietary recommendations and Chinese herbs.

If 100 patients are treated with acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy and Oriental medicine for anxiety, each of these 100 people will receive a unique, customized treatment with different acupuncture points, and different lifestyle and diet recommendations.

Here are just a few problems acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help with:

Depressive Disorders

Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

Anxiety, Insomnia, and Stress Disorders

Acupuncture, Herbs, Homeopathy and Dietary supplements, are an excellent addition to any treatment plan you are doing with an MD or mental health profession —  as it is used to help the body restore balance, treating the root of the disorder, while also diminishing symptoms.

Flu Cured by Homeopathy

This is a brief story of a woman who had severe food-poisoning which lead to severe diarrhea, uncontrolled vomiting, high fever and the flu. How many of you have actually ever connected the fact that what you eat has a lot to do with latter developing a cold or flu? But in fact, about 50% of colds and the flu begin with eating the wrong thing!

I see this all the time in my practice. It is very common to see my patients unconsciously undermine their treatment by eating the wrong thing. They are feeling better, and so they go ahead and have a few beers, or a couple of cokes, or a Big Mac, maybe a large salad, or some chocolate cake at a party. Of course there is nothing wrong with any of these foods at all. Unless, that is, if you already know that eating them has in the past made you ill, and that we are trying to strengthen your immune system. Or if you have a weak Spleen or Blocked Liver meridian.

In this case, a female patient of mine who we had been treating for quite a few years for emotional problems, like depression, insomnia and anxiety, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome, was doing quite well for about 6 months. She was on a stable preventative regimine, which included a, a homeopathic remedy, multi-vitamin mineral supplement, fish oils, a Chinese herbal formula and an every 3 week acupuncture regimen.

Then one day she experienced an unusual amount of stress at work with her boss, and at home with her husband. Instead of processing the events that had taken place using healthy emotional tools, she chose to fall back into an old eating behavior she had before beginning her treatment. She went for the ice cream. She knew intuitively that this was a very bad move, but she did it on impulse.

And sure enough, she woke the next morning with a slightly scratchy throat, which developed over the next few days into a full fledged strep throat and the flu. This was because her basic weakness is a Damp Spleen with some Liver involvement. So when she eats either frozen, cold or a lot of raw food, she generally ends up pretty sick.

Fortunately, she thought to call me immediately, and we got her on a specific homeopathic remedy called Dulcamara, which matched all of her emotional and physical symptoms. We also got her on some immune supplements, and in no time at all, she was able to swallow with no pain. Needless to say, she was very happy.

Herbs for Immunity by Dr. Randy Martin, OMD

Chinese Herbs for Immunity by Dr. Randy Martin, OMD

There are many different Chinese herbs that are useful for treatment of various immune problems. The Doctor of Chinese Medicine generally will not, in fact, use single herbs for treatment of immune problems. This is because of the synergistic effects of using formulas. The herbs tend to complement each other and when used in a formula, they tend to be much more effective than when using the single herbs.

So that you can more effectively choose which formulas and herbs you might wish to take for immune problems, I’m offering this brief run-down on some of the more commonly used. I’d like to acknowledge Andrw Gaeddert for an article he wrote which was my inspiration to write this short summary. If you want to do your own research, just do an internet search. There is plenty of information on the net on these herbs.

Isatis – This plant is one of the more commonly used herbs for boosting the immune system. It is contained in many Chinese herbal formulas. It can be used for bacterial infections, for the flu, hepatitiis, mononucleosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. There are many studies on this herb.

Licorice – Many of us know this as a candy, or a tea, but it also is used to build immunity. It can fight cysts and other tumors and also helps to detoxify the liver. Because it is sweet, it supports the spleen. And in Chinese medicine, the Spleen is the organ in charge of immunity. Licorice can also be used to raise blood pressure and to support the adrenal glands. So if you have headaches or high blood pressure, this herb may make them worse. On the other hand, if your headaches are due to low blood sugar, then licorice may cure the problem.

Ligustrum – This herb tonifies the Yin in your body, so it will increase the production of white blood cells and can be used to treat leukopenia. It can be used with people who are undergoing chemotherapy and radiation

Schizandra – This versatile herb is often seen in Chinese formulas for insomnia and anxiety, but it’s also good for the immune system. By helping to deal with stress and fatigue, it will have an indirect effect on the immune system. This is because if you are not sleeping well or you are stressed out, your system is ripe to get sick.

Astragalus – This herb is great for strengthening the lungs and the body’s defenses. It can fight fatigue and improve or tonify your body to help prevent illness.

Cordyceps – This is one of the many mushrooms that you can use for immunity. There are actually many mushrooms, or fungus’ for the immune system. This one is great to help relax you, to strengthen the nervous system and to help the cardiovascular system. It’s used commonly in Chinese hospitals for wheezing, asthma and to prevent colds.

Andrographis – This herb is used to treat infections, such as herpes, sore throat, pneumonia, and the common cold. It is used in many herbal formulas for colds and the flu, bronchitis and even strep.

There are so many herbs that can be used for the immune system. I always tell my patients that the best thing to do is to experiment to see which work best on them. After you have figured this out, then you will always know which one to use to prevent a cold, or to treat a bad flu.

Also be certain to take the appropriate vitamins and to eat a diet which will facilitate a healthy immune system.
