Dear Friends ~ I’ve found some research to share with you on tennis elbow, arthritis, urinary infections, and depression.  Quite a wide array of problems. And acupuncture works well for them all.  Please encourage your friends to try some complementary methods to treat their problems.  I’m constantly amazed by how well and in some cases, how fast, acupuncture, homeopathy, and herbs really work.

Also, an increasing number of people are coming to see me for infertility treatments:  both men and women.  And fertility MD’s are also referring an increasing number of patients for infertility treatments.

Times are fast-paced, and an increasing number of people are coming to my offices for stress-related problems, which are manifesting as physical issues.  I encourage all of you to try and take time for yourself to relax, pray, and/or meditate daily.

Find a special, sacred space, in your home, or in nature to spend time daily, to receive the revitalizing effects of slowing down, and listening to the inner wisdom of your higher self.  Spending time in nature is a particularly effective way to get rejuvenated quickly.

When you feel stressed, try to go easy on both yourself and those around you.  Kindness and gentleness go a long way to reducing stress.  Arguing, whether you “win” or “loose” only creates more stress in the long-run.  ”Win-Win” is the only true winner in our relationships, with both sides walking away feeling a sense of being heard, and honored.

Try to plan a nurturing activity for yourself, so that you feel you can give the nuturing you need to yourself, and not have to depend on others or on events in your life, in order to feel grounded and whole.

In Love and Healing,

Dr. Randy Martin, OMD, LAc, CCH, PhD.

Acupuncture for Tennis Elbow

In this study, 45 patiens were given two acupunctuure treatments per week for five weeks.  Two weeks after the treatments ended, the  group who received the acupuncture had significantly more strength, arm flexibility and less pain then the control group.  Two months after  the treatment ended, arm function was still significantly improved.

Acupuncture for Urinary Tract Infections

In this study, 94 women were given acupuncture two times per week for four weeks.  Of these women, all had gotten at least three UTI’s during the previous 12 months before the acupuncture treatment.  Of these women,73% remained infection-free during the six months after the treatment.  Of the women who didn’t received acupuncture, only 53% remained infection-free.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Helpful in Treating Depression

Recent research has shown that people with depression have an abnormally low amount of PUFA’s (Omega-3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids) in their blood cells, and in their dietary intake.  In this study, reported in European Neuropsychopharmacology (2003;13:267-271), 28 patients with major depression were given Omega-3 PUFA’s and found to have significantly less depression as a result.

Acupuncture Shown to Reduce Arthritis Pain

Acupuncture, in addition to conventional therapy, reduces the pain suffered by people with osteoarthritis, according to the results of an NIH-supported study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Dr. Brian M. Berman, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and his colleagues studied the impact of acupuncture on pain levels in knee arthritis among the elderly. The researchers evaluated 73 people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee that could not be relieved by standard anti-inflammatory drugs.

After 3 months, there were significant changes. Acupuncture did reduce their pain, they had less stiffness, and they were able to function better.

These results offer encouragement as he and his colleagues plan a larger trial of 570 patients.

Acupuncture Effective for Pregnancy and Fertility Help

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Here are two really great articles on the successful use of Acupuncture for Fertility and Successful Pregnancy and Birthing

Acupuncture ‘helps women have babies’
Chinese treatment raises success rate of IVF
    •    Denis Campbell, health correspondent
    •    The Observer, Sunday September 21 2008

Women undergoing fertility treatment are far more likely to successfully give birth if they also have acupuncture, a major scientific study has concluded.

The research found that women suffering with fertility problems who underwent the ancient Chinese treatment increased their chance of having a baby from one in five to one in three. Acupuncture involves inserting extremely fine needles into specific points on the body, along qi energy channels, to stimulate the body’s own healing system.

The finding will offer hope to the 33,000 women a year who undertake IVF treatment, many of whom are willing to make any change to their lifestyle or health routine that might increase their chances of becoming a mother.

Researchers led by Ying Cheong, from the reproductive medicine unit at the University of Southampton and the city’s Princess Anne hospital, concluded that ‘acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer achieves a higher live birth rate of 35 per cent compared with 22 per cent without active acupuncture’. Embryo transfer is when an embryo that has been fertilised in the laboratory is implanted into a woman’s womb. The research found that the chance of the embryo implanting successfully, resulting in pregnancy, increased significantly if a woman underwent acupuncture around the same time as the transfer.

‘Our research is good news because it shows that acupuncture can help with fertility in patients undergoing IVF. Whether or not acupuncture helps women achieve a live birth is a controversial issue, and opinion has been divided on it,’ said Cheong. ‘We show that acupuncture, performed at the right stage, can have significant benefit. A woman who does so has a much greater chance of having a live birth than a woman who doesn’t have acupuncture.’

Acupuncture Clinical Trial a Boon for Women Experiencing Fertility Challenges

September 3, 2008 — Getting pregnant with her first child was difficult, and when Rebecca Killmeyer of Charlottesville, Va. experienced a miscarriage during her second pregnancy, she wasn’t sure if she would ever have another baby. She decided to enter a study testing the impact of acupuncture on women with polycystic ovary syndrome at the University of Virginia Health System, and came out with a miracle.

“To our great surprise, we were blessed with a third pregnancy during the PCOS study,” said Killmeyer. “I’m absolutely certain the acupuncture treatments helped me ovulate regularly, which allowed me to become pregnant.”

Lisa Pastore, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the U.Va. Health System and principal researcher of the study, said her goal has been to help women with PCOS have regular menstrual cycles. PCOS causes a hormonal imbalance, interfering with ovulation and ultimately, fertility. With several women in the study reporting pregnancies, Pastore believes that acupuncture could be an important drug-free therapy for women with this disorder.

“Over the last year we have seen women who never had a regular menstrual cycle start having regular periods. We can also boast several pregnancies since the study began,” she said. “Now we would like to recruit more people in order to complete the study. It is important for research to have enough participants to ensure that the results are scientifically credible and not due to chance.”

Killmeyer said she was initially skeptical about the experimental treatment..

”When I saw those tiny little needles coming at me, I thought to myself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this!,’ but I tried it and after a few minutes I was asleep on the table,” Killmeyer said. “The sessions were completely refreshing after awhile.”

Killmeyer learned of her PCOS in 2005. Over the past five years she did not have regular, monthly periods. One month after she started acupuncture treatments, she got a period and for the next three months, they continued.

“I had finished all my acupuncture treatments and was in the end stages of the study when I became pregnant,” Killmeyer said. “We had already scheduled our follow-up appointment with our fertility doctors when we found out we were pregnant.”

Five percent of reproductive-age women are affected by PCOS.

Symptoms may include small cysts on their ovaries, infrequent or irregular vaginal bleeding, male-pattern hair growth and acne. Insulin resistance and pre-diabetes also can develop.

While many traditional drugs and therapies may manage this syndrome, Pastore’s research is assessing whether acupuncture can be successful in regulating hormones and curing the symptoms of PCOS.

Fertility, IVF and Acupuncture for Pregnancy

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Women undergoing IVF were 65 percent more likely to become pregnant when they combined the procedure with acupuncture, a recent study has shown. The remarkable success rate occurred across seven acupuncture trial studies involving 1,366 women in a systematic review and meta-analysis published in a February, 2008 issue of the British Medical Journal.

Acupuncture was delivered either just before or just after embryo transfer – a step in the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) whereby one or several embryos are placed into the uterus.

The research was carried out by scientists from the University of Maryland in the United States and the VU University of Amsterdam in Holland.

It is thought that acupuncture stimulates the neurotransmitters that trigger the production of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, which controls the menstrual cycle and a woman’s ovulation.

Acupuncture is also thought to stimulate blood flow to the uterus and boost the production of endogenous opioids, inducing the body to relax.

Dr. Martin’s Comments:  Acupuncture has been used for centuries to regulate and boost fertility.   This is honestly one of the most rewarding parts to my practice.  It’s fun to watch couples get pregnant who have tried and tried, but had no success.   Over the years I have seen so many women getting pregnant using some combination of IVF, Acupuncture, Homeopathy and Herbs.  Also rewarding is assisting in the birth process with either acupuncture and / or homeopathy.  Please call us for more information, or to schedule a first appointment.
Most insurance does now cover acupuncture, but only for pain related problems.   But we can also check to see if your insurance covers the acupuncture for fertility.  It depends on the individual insurance policy you have.

Jennifer Aniston Turns to Acupuncture to Boost Fertility

Jennifer Aniston Turns to Acupuncture to Boost Fertility

Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston has reportedly turned to acupuncture in a bid to improve her chances of conceiving, according to new celebrity rumours.

Acupuncture is said to stimulate the energy pathways of the body using very fine needles and is thought to help boost fertility levels in patients hoping to get pregnant.

Commenting on the 39-year-old star’s move to try the alternative medicine, leading acupuncture practitioner Andrew Loosely said: “This will help women realise that acupuncture has an important role in fertility.”

The latest figures from Healthwise show a success rate of over 64 per cent in fertility cases - this compares to an IVF success rate of between 25 and 35 per cent.

“Even for those already going through an IVF or IUI programme we have increased their chances by 35 per cent with the additional use of acupuncture,” he added.

According to the British Medical Acupuncture Society, a typical course of treatment can last between five to eight sessions.
